Theorem-KC / Destination Winter Guard -
On
Feb. 4, 2012 Destination Winter Guard performed for the first time in
MCCGA competition. They are competing as an Independent Regional A
unit, and received one of the top scores out of twenty-five units within
six classifications . Per our educational aspect of Theorem,
Destination is comprised of just high school age performers who do not
have winter guard programs available at their home schools; which makes
this first performance extremely special because as an Independent unit
they are competing against units who use performers up to 21 years of
age. Congrats goes out to the performers and Staff of Destination!!
Jim Riley, Honorary Board Member –
Since 2000 Jim has been the band leader and drummer
for the country band Rascal Flatts. The
band has set
more concert attendance records than any country act selling more than six
million tickets. They have also sold twenty million albums, twenty-five million
digital downloads, and earned thirteen number-one charting singles. Moreover,
Rascal Flatts became one of only four country acts to ever debut six
consecutive studio albums at number-one. They have won nearly forty awards from
the ACM, CMA, AMA and People's Choice, among others, and they have received a
star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Jim
has also been voted Best Drum Clinician by readers of the publication Modern
Drummer, and Best Country Drummer by the readers of Drum magazine.
Jim’s musical background includes attending the University of North Texas
where he studied Drum Set with Ed Soph and Marching Percussion with Paul Renick. While at NT he performed with the nationally acclaimed
North Texas Drum Line and won 5 PASIC championships. In addition, he also performed in the Drum
Corps International Finals as a member of the 1989 Velvet Knights Drum &
Bugle Corps.
After receiving his degree from North Texas and
performing with VK, Jim moved to Kansas
City where he began to record with guitarist Jeff
Scheetz; he also took a job with Kansas City Drumworks building and selling
custom drums. Looking to further his
career as a performer Jim then moved to Nashville.
Less than a year later he was playing
with country artist Mark Chesnutt and outlaw rocker Hank Williams III. Currently,
when not touring or recording with Rascal Flatts, Jim keeps busy playing
sessions in Nashville
and giving lessons. Jim is endorsed by
Ludwig, Sabian, Vater, Remo, Shure, and Gibraltar.

Drum Corps World Interview:
Something unexpected, yet very positive, occurred. Our
organization was approached by Mr. Steve Vickers, the publisher
of Drum Corps World, to conduct an interview which appeared in the
May 2011 online issue of Drum Corps World. The interview
focused on our business first approach as well as our commitment to
methodical growth; we hope you all find the article interesting. Thanks
goes out to Mr. Vickers for having interest in our fledgling group. Here is a link to read the interview: DCW Interview.
"Theorem" :
We are pleased to announce that the initial kickoff of
the instructional color guard program “Theorem” was a great success!
Youth from areas along the I-70 corridor in Missouri
from Columbia to St. Louis
learned from three drum corps veterans in a guided curriculum environment at Rock Bridge High School in Columbia.
Ages of the youth ranged from 15 to 18 with a median age of 17.
Participants built a common vocabulary of performance fundamentals in
dance and on equipment. Many of the youth commented that the time spent
on fundamental dance skills will improve their personal color guard performance
across the board. Participants were also excited to discover that a wide
range of color guard performing opportunities exist across the central
Midwestern region. The Theorem instructional / performance program is open to all
interested high school color guard performers age 14 - 18 who do not have performing winter guards at their home schools, and it is open to youth 19 - 20 who want to develop leadership skills.
Initial Project Launched January 2011:
We have secured an interim Development Professional as well as a few other
professionals in the community to help guide us in building an initial
project. To make sure that we stay
within the premises of quality, financial stability, and community impact, we
have decided that our initial project will be Color Guard oriented and will be developed
through the auspices of the BSA Venturing Program. This project will
consist of three levels with the implementation of the third level coinciding
with the inception of our full-fledged Drum & Bugle Corps. To read about the program click on the Venturing Programs link.

Meeting with DCI:
On November 14, 2009, members of the Momentum Board met in Indianapolis with DCI Executive Director, Dan Acheson, and DCI Events Coordinator, Sue Kuehnhold. The meeting was held to discuss the current and future status of Momentum as well as for us to receive advice for our long-term relationship with DCI. During the meeting, both Mr. Acheson and Ms. Kuehnhold were very enthusiastic in their desire to help us build our organization. They were impressed by our methodical approach to building the organization on a solid foundation and our willingness to be patient before developing the performance aspect of the corps. At the end of the meeting, Mr. Acheson stated that he fully believes that we will succeed in our goals. That voice of approval will go a long way in keeping up our drive to succeed.
